Soil health challenge

The Spanish Living Lab (ES-LL) operates in one of the most desertification-prone regions of Europe, located in the semi-arid Mediterranean drylands of Eastern Spain. The region faces increasing pressure from soil degradation, water scarcity, and climate change. Key challenges include severe droughts, soil erosion on slopes and abandoned lands, soil compaction and salinization, nutrient imbalances from manure and slurry management, and loss of vegetation cover and biodiversity. Through regenerative practices, improved nutrient management, and better grazing strategies, the ES-LL aims to restore soil structure, improve water retention, enhance ecosystem resilience, and support sustainable land management across Mediterranean landscapes.
