ReSoilMed LL by Nemesis celebrates its Kick-off Meeting to boost soil health and combat desertification in the Mediterranean

The Spanish Living Lab, ReSoilMed LL by Nemesis, celebrated its Kick-off Meeting with a hybrid event in Murcia and Valencia, Spain on June 25th 2026. At the event, the team officially launched this new collaborative space focused on improving soil health, reducing the risk of desertification and strengthening the resilience of Mediterranean agricultural and livestock systems.

The event took place in a hybrid format between CIFEA Torre-Pacheco, in Murcia, and AVA-ASAJA Finca Sinyent, in Polinyà de Xúquer, Valencia, bringing together representatives from research, the agricultural sector, cooperatives, technology companies and actors linked to the sustainable management of the territory.

ReSoilMed LL 's role as the Spanish Living Lab of Nemesis was presented. This is a real-world environment for co-creation and experimentation where farmers, livestock farmers, cooperatives, researchers, administrations, and innovation stakeholders can validate practical solutions to address challenges such as soil degradation, water scarcity, loss of organic matter, erosion, compaction, soil biodiversity, and adaptation to climate change.

The meeting provided an opportunity to present Nemesis's main objectives, its Living Labs-based approach, and the network of experimental sites that will form part of the Spanish ecosystem. These sites will be focused on analyzing and validating sustainable management practices in diverse Mediterranean contexts, including agricultural, livestock, agro-livestock, and regenerative systems.

The event featured the participation of Antonio Skarmeta, from the University of Murcia, coordinator of ReSoilMed LL; Julián Colunje, researcher on the ReSoilMed LL coordinating team at the University of Murcia; Ana García and Neus Hernández , from AVA-ASAJA, experimental sites managers of ReSoilMed LL; Melisa Gómez, from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, researcher on the ReSoilMed LL technical team; Yanniek Schoonhoven, from El Junquero SA, experimental sites manager of ReSoilMed LL; Ana Belén Olivares, from FECOAM, experimental sites manager of ReSoilMed LL; and Manuel Mora, from OdinS, technology partner of the Living Lab.

In addition to the project presentation and the tour of the experimental sites, the event included participatory sessions to gather attendees' priorities, expectations, and needs. This input will guide future Living Lab activities, including workshops, consultation processes, indicator validation, data collection, and the design of intervention strategies tailored to the specific conditions of the area.

During the event, also presented the Open Call 1, aimed at strengthening the networking capacity of the Living Labs and facilitating the incorporation of new experimental sites and stakeholders into the project ecosystem. This call offers an opportunity to expand Nemesis' territorial reach, promote new collaborations, and support initiatives that contribute to combating desertification and soil degradation based on real-world contexts and local needs.

Nemesis aims to create a Mediterranean network of interconnected Living Labs in Cyprus, France, Italy, North Africa, and Spain, focused on combating desertification, reversing soil degradation, and promoting sustainable land management practices. Through co-creation, real-world experimentation, the use of data, soil health indicators, and digital tools, the project seeks to generate useful knowledge for farmers, livestock farmers, technicians, government administrations and decision-makers. Within this framework, ReSoilMed LL by Nemesis represents the Spanish Living Lab and acts as a space for collaboration between science, the agricultural sector, cooperatives, technology and territory, with special attention to Mediterranean challenges related to soil, water, agriculture, livestock and desertification.
